World Water Day

March 22nd is UN World Water Day and this year’s theme is Water and Food Security. According to their website, each of us uses between two and four litres of water per day, however, most of this is contained in the food we eat. So, World Water Day aims to encourage everyone to be aware of how much water is used to produce the foods and drinks we consume every day. Depending on the age of the children, why not show this great animation – Water for Food – to demonstrate how much water is used to produce the food we eat and how we can reduce this amount. And, for the younger ones, you could show how water moves around the planet with our great Felt Watercycle Wall Hanging.

Go Blue! Campaign

Another great idea to highlight the importance of water in our lives is the Just a Drop Go Blue! Campaign. Simply get your children to dress is something blue for the day and paint their faces blue using our blue face paint and a sponge or brush. They can then spend the day creating and painting water inspired pictures using some of the following:

blue glitter

blue sand

blue foam sheets

fluorescent and normal blue paint

ocean fadeless roll

azure and rich blue fadeless border roll

foam rollers or wide foam brushes for creating waves

sea-life stencils

bucket of shells

The Importance of Enough Water

The human body needs 1.2 litres or six 200ml glasses per day to be fully functional. Dehydration leads to tired, irritable children who find it difficult to concentrate in class so is something best avoided. An interesting exercise would be to ask the children to keep a diary for one week before World Water Day to discover just how much water they currently consume. They can do this by keeping a simple log on a piece of A4 card. Divide the sheet into days, with columns showing how much is consumed each day and what that liquid is. This can then be stuck into their Scrap books as a reminder to make sure they drink enough.

This would also be a good time to educate the children about what are good and bad drinks and further advice on this can be found here.
